Module Overview
Professional engineers need to communicate technical concepts to fellow professionals and the broader community. This course consolidates the concepts and skills introduced at Level 1 EDPS and concentrates on developing leadership, team working and developing a sense of commercial awareness. A major project will be undertaken and used as the main forum for these skills to be demonstrated and assessed.

Module Aims
To achieve the learning outcomes described below
Learning Outcomes
By the end of Level 2 EDPS the students should have:
  • appreciation of the importance of professionally presenting your achievements;
  • an understanding of how to efficiently participate in, and run a project team;
  • gained an appreciation of what constitutes good leadership and team work;
  • a familiarity with the basics of marketing and negotiating;
  • utilised all of the above in a technical design project and produce the necessary documentation within set time and technical constraints;
  • gained an appreciation of how new enterprise is initiated and how new products are brought to the market place.
Module Content
The following topics will be covered in this module:
·         The professional year
·         Pre-paring for industry – beyond university
·         Introduction to portfolio project – designing a competition
·         Professional development – a guide to best practice
·         Career planning – effective use of resources
·         Negotiation – understanding the process and effective techniques
·         Marketing – how to be effective in marketing yourself and products
·         Leadership – good leadership skills for team working

Commercial awareness - the completion of an enterprise project

Methods of Teaching/Learning
1-hr Lecture per week in Weeks 1-10
2-hr Tutorial per week in Weeks 2-10
2-day Short Course on Leadership in Week 14 or 15
Selected Texts/Journals
A wide range of reading in the above-mentioned topics will be required using library resources
