Module Overview

This module helps first-year students to begin to develop skills in design and technical presentation, along with other skills required by the professional engineer.

Prerequisites/Co-requisites
None
Module Aims

The aims of this course are to give the students an understanding of some principles of engineering, the design of circuits and systems/products, an idea of the opportunities and boundaries of engineering and finally some of the skills that all engineers will need.

This module will be integrated with other modules, in particular the practical elements of this module, will be coordinated with the laboratory exercises.

The level 1 course provides the foundation for level 2 EDPS where these ideas will be consolidated and expanded.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the students should be able to:

(i)              Understand the role of the professional engineer

(ii)            To develop research techniques

(iii)           To develop oral and written presentation skills

(iv)          To develop basic circuit design, analysis and characterisation skills

   (v)       To develop product development skills
