Module Overview
Economics is a data-driven subject and figures on growth, unemployment, spending and inflation provide the raw material for many of the theories that dominate the subject.
This module adopts a dual aproach to exploring the data on which economics relies. Lectures will be focused on understanding the data, discussing the measurement issues which arise in producing the key macroeconomic data series. The laboratory sessions will be focused on using the data, developing students understanding or interpreting and presenting data series using Excel

Module Aims

To promote an understanding of how data is used by economicsts and develop students Excel skills so that they can competently analysis real data using a range of techniques

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module students should:-

  • understand the key issues involved in the measurement of GDP, consumer prices and unemployment
  • be aware of the main trends in these variables since the 1950s
  • be able to interpret graphs and charts containing economic data
  • be able to produce clear and interpretable graphs using Microsoft Excel
  • use the descriptive functions in Excel and interpret the results they find
  • produce a written report on one series of macroeconomic data, describing its measurement and evolution over time using the skills learned in the module
