Module Overview

To introduce students to the basic word processing, e-mail and presentational tools available in the Office suite of software. Students will be able to use these independently by the end of the module. By taking examples from other Level 1 modules, the module aims to provide an integrated approach to the use of computing in business.

None

Module Aims

To equip students to be able to use IT efficiently and effectively and to produce work to an acceptable level for the business environment.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students will:-
  • Be able to use personal computers in a networked environment effectively.
  • Understand and use the windows operating system, the World Wide Web and electronic mail; carry out word processing and make effective use of presentational and graphic tools.
Module Content

The following is an indication of the likely topics to be covered:-

  • Windows basic structure and menus
  • Word: entering, editing and saving text
  • Word: formatting, tabs, fonts, styles, columns, headers and footers. 
  • Word: tools; spell check, thesaurus, indexing 
  • Word: creating and formatting long documents; page and section breaks; table of contents
  • Word: inclusion of objects, images, text and scanned documents
  • Word: mail merge
  • Presentations and graphics using PowerPoint
  • Internet: search strategies, useful resources, avoiding plagiarism, referencing
