Module Aims
The aims of this module are to:
• Introduce you to research methods that support creative practice. • Forge a connection between your practice and broader musical culture. • Develop analytic insight into idiomatic compositional practice. • Develop practical skill in idiomatic compositional practice.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module you should be able to:
• Carry out research and analysis in support of creative practice. • Understanding the value and process of research-based strategies in support of creative practice. • Compose more strongly idiomatic music. • Work effectively with audio samples as primary source material to produce convincing compositions. • Sustain an effective studio-practice regime. Transferable skills: • Adopt a professional approach to your musical activities whether working individually or with others. • Develop a critical attitude towards the sources of knowledge you draw on during your studies and learn how to manage the information they contain in order to meet the demands of your assignments.

• Research methods for creative practice and how to integrate and develop research as part of your studio practice. • The history and practice of ‘remixing’ within the club culture and DJ-practice. • The history and practice of using ‘found sound’ in computer-based creative practice. • Compositional methodology. • Content related to student work. • Presentation and discussion of student work.

• Lectures. • Seminars. • Tutorials. • Workshops. • Guided reading and listening. • Responding to questions in class. • Preparing and giving class presentations. • Producing a portfolio of research material and an accompanying composition. • Producing a portfolio of individual compositional work.
