Module Overview
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Module Aims

To give a broad overview of the development of malignant disease with emphasis on the molecular biology of the cancer cell.

To provide an understanding of how both exogenous and endogenous factors such as diet, viruses and xenobiotics contribute to the development of human cancers

To familiarise the student with aspects of malignant disease relating to haematological cancers and the most common solid tumours

To provide up to date information on new targeted therapies being developed for the use of cancers as well as familiarising the student with the principles of cancer chemotherapy drugs

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of the module the student should be able to:-

Understand the factors responsible for the development of the most common forms of cancer

Appreciation of the development of cancers from early precancerous lesions to terminal disease from the viewpoint of histopathology

Understand how on can interfere with the development of cancers both in a chemo-preventative setting and also by the use of chemotherapeutic agents

Gain an understanding into the development and use of new targeted therapies based on rational design

Selected Texts/Journals

Recommended Books:

Molecular Biology of Cancer, L Pecorino, Oxford University Press, 2nd Edition.  ISBN: 0199264724 (£24.88)

Molecular Biology of Human Cancers: an advanced student’s textbook by Wolfgang Arthur Schulz, Springer £35.00 ISBN 978-1-40206559-0

A recently published book on "The Biology of Cancer" by Robert A Weinburg, ISBN: 0815340761 published by Garland Science (2006), is most impressive at first sight, but contains far more information that you need at this stage.  However, those of you who are hoping to go on to do medicine or get involved in cancer research might consider purchase as it will last.  (price: £41.99  -  paperback)
