Module Overview

This module provides an introduction to pharmacology, covering the basic principles of how drugs work and the actions of many of the major drug classes in therapeutic use. It also includes the fundamentals of how the body handles drugs, covering the major pathways of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion as well as factors that can influence these.

Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Module Aims
  • To provide an overview of pharmacology with the emphasis on therapeutically useful drugs
  •  To provide a framework, based on physiology and biochemistry, for understanding the mechanism of action of drugs

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:-

  • Describe how drugs can modify the activity of various body systems
  • Describe how this can be therapeutically useful and also how this can give rise to side effects
  • Be familiar with the major classes of drugs in therapeutic use
  • Know how the body handles drugs, and how this influences the response to some drugs
