Module Overview

This module addresses the essential concepts of pathology and provides students with important background knowledge of clinical medicine that is required as the basis for biomedical sciences, or for health-related professions. The contents of this module bridge the basic science with the pathogenesis of human diseases, which gives students an appreciation and understanding of the principles of major organ diseases in our body.

Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Module Aims
  • To introduce students to the language of pathology and clinical medicine 
  • To provide students with the principles of general pathology and the application of these to systematic pathology
  • To give students a basic understanding of the pathogenesis, characteristics and outcome of examples of diseases. 
  • To provide a background knowledge of clinical medicine as a basis for biomedical sciences, clinical nutrition and dietetics.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:-

  • Define the terms used in the description of the characteristics of disease
  • Explain the difference between aetiology and risk factors
  • Describe the pathogenesis and characteristics of the major categories of disease
  • Show knowledge of specific organ disorders and the way in whcih they affect our body systems
  • Understand data from pathology and clinical chemistry for clinical diagnosis
  • Show basic knowledge of key areas of clinical medicine.
