Assessment Pattern

Coursework:   2 practical write ups, 15% each, deadline 2 weeks after   each practical has run

Examination:  MCQ 70%

Module Overview

This module will provide students with the theoretical basis of selected laboratory techniques important in chemical and biochemical analysis. Students will also gain practical experience of analytical chromatography and the use of clinical laboratory test strips. Students will also analyse some basic laboratory data.

Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Module Aims

  •  The module aims to provide students with knowledge and practical experience of selected techniques used in analytical biochemistry and chemistry
  • To stress recent developments in these techniques, including advances due to new equipment where appropriate

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module you should be:-

  • Able to describe the principles of the major techniques used by biochemists
  • Knowledgeable about the key components of the major analytical systems and their applications
  • Prepared to make informed choice of a technique or method for a specified measurement
  • Able to understand how to interpret chromatographic, spectroscopic and other results
  • Able to propose suitable approaches to sample preparation for clinical samples
  • Describe appropriate quality assurance procedures for bioanalysis
