Prepared Portfolio evidence (40%)
Assessments to be submitted directly to the NHS training facilitator at dates t.b.c.
A 60% pass mark is required for this module to progress to Level 3 ABMS. Students with a 40-59% mark may transfer to Level 3 on the BMS route.

Module Overview |
This module is delivered via 17 tutorials at the University Campus followed by an 8 week practical placement at one of the following hospitals: Ashford, St. Peters, Redhill,
Frimley
Park & Royal
Surrey
County
Hospital .
During the placement there will be six hours of contact time with the training facilitator, and 12 hours of contact time with training officers based at the pathology laboratories |

Minimum mark of 60% in BMS1021 Biomedical Science Practice 1

Module Aims |

To ensure student competency in preparation of materials for completion of an IBMS Registration Portfolio for the award of a Certificate of Competence (Compliance with Health Professions Council (HPC) and Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) standards)

To ensure student understanding of the requirements for HPC registration and renewal
-
To ensure student understanding of summer placement activities
-
To expand knowledge of the role and career of a biomedical scientist
-
To expand knowledge of the role of biomedical scientists in the diagnosis and management of disease
-
To provide specialist hospital-based training in one of the following disciplines: Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Cytology, Histology and Immunology

By the end of the module, you will be expected to be able to:

Provide evidence for an IBMS Registration Portfolio

Demonstrate competency in designated placement activities

Effectively reflect and critique on evidence for an IBMS Registration Portfolio

Interpret National External Quality Assessment Service reports and define External Quality Assessment

Identify key CPD requirements for registration

Discriminate between and interpret case studies from key areas i.e. Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Cytology, Histology and Immunology

Recognise good and bad infection control

Define SHOT and the role of the transfusion nurse specialist
